Plot:
Scott and Kelly's investigation of the disappearance of an old Chinese train between Hong Kong and the Communist mainland leads to an ancient walled city, a beautiful American schoolteacher, and a secret cargo someone is willing to kill for. But things are never as they seem, and innocents do die along the way.

R. B. Mitsch's most memorable
scene and/or quote:
Kelly: "He's an intellectual. A Rhodes Scholar as a mater of fact, egghead. So gentlemen, what you have here is your average tennis bum and your average scholar. Hit 'em with something scholarly, Scotty."
Scotty: "Right. (Latin words) or No Somes a voto serrice?"
Kelly: "Very good. He's also a linguist. Something else Mr. Scott."
Scotty: "Certainly. (Turkish words)"
Kelly: "What was that?"
Scotty: "That was Turkish."
Kelly: "no kidding?"
Scotty: "certainly."
Kelly: "How about that?"

R. B. Mitsch's review and rating:
For a network pilot this episode is not bad. It sets up character well
and gives the flavor of the series to come. But as a mid-season story
it's only slightly above par. The plot's interesting but it's a bit
thin for 50 minutes. Culp and Cosby have some great moments and the
magnificent location work is by far best of the Hong Kong episodes.
Beyond the fastly developed Vera Miles romance and the fact that Scotty
is given little to do for most of acts III and IV, this one is sill fun
to watch.

D. P. Cole's most memorable
scene and/or quote:
Kelly: "The point that still doesn't wash Scotty, is even the bad guys don't kill the good guys unless there's a reason for it. We're not even on assignment."
Scotty: "Maybe we are."
Kelly: "Without knowing about it? That's a new one even for the Pentagon."

D. P. Cole's review and rating:
There are significantly better episodes in this season, but this episode does what it was set out to do: Convince the network that "I Spy" was viable and could get ratings. And, as most pilot episodes go, this pilot must go through the arduous task of introducing the characters while providing a suitable plot which grabs the viewer. This story does exactly that. It's better than a run-of-the-mill story, but not the greatest. In retrospect, if a series' pilot was the best, with all subsequent episodes being bad...
