R. B. Mitsch's review and rating:
A riveting episode that really explores the character of Kelly Robinson. Robert Culp comes through again delivering an intelligent script with high suspense. I only wish I could've seen the mission that put Kelly in this awful state! However, what a setup: a suicide mission for a hero gone suicidal. I would've liked to see this played up more- Kelly making rash decisions or moments of weakness. (though for that we already have season 2's "A Room With a Rack") This is the type of character depth and high stakes that make I Spy great. Culp and Cos are terrific as usual and France Nuyen (Future Mrs. Culp) is very good as well. Look for the strong scene where Kelly must persuade the Doctor to join them in their escape. Extremely well done all around. Definitely another high point in season 1.

D. P. Cole's review and rating:
Like most "I Spy" stories, you want to make time in advance since you will be glued to the TV set for the entire hour. This episode is particularly grim in feel, and even Kelly goes to very unusual (to his associates and to the viewers) lengths to get the job done.
Best of all is where Kelly takes a wild gamble to bluff Maclean into helping him escape... I never saw it coming!
